How Rolling Tarp Systems Cut Load and Unload Time

Ask a flatbed driver what they’d cut from the job if they could, and tarping is near the top of the list. It’s slow, it’s physical, and it happens twice on every covered load — once to protect it and once to open it back up at the receiver. On its own, one tarping doesn’t sound like much. Multiplied across a week of loads, it’s one of the biggest quiet drains on how many turns a truck can make.

Where the time goes with manual tarping 

Manual tarping isn’t one task. It’s a sequence, and every step costs minutes. 

First, you retrieve the tarp, usually stored and strapped at the headboard, and drag it into position. Then you climb onto the load to spread it, work it into place, and pull it down evenly on both sides. Then you climb back down, fold and secure the edges, and tie or bungee everything off so it survives highway wind. On a second tarp, or an awkward load, you do parts of it twice. 

Industry estimates put a single manual tarping at roughly 20 to 30 minutes for one person under decent conditions. Add wind, cold, rain, ice on the load, or a commodity that doesn’t want to stay covered, and that number climbs. And it’s not just slow — it’s the part of the job where drivers get hurt. There’s often nowhere to safely stand on a load, and a gust of wind catching a tarp has been known to push a driver right off the trailer. 

What a rolling system gives back 

A rolling tarp system replaces almost all of that sequence with a single motion. The tarped frame slides on tracks along the top rails of the trailer; it compresses like an accordion as it’s pushed back to open the bed, then pulls forward again to cover the full length of the load. No retrieving, no climbing, no spreading, no re-folding. 

The headline benefit is that the system opens and closes with far less time and effort than manual tarping, and it gives you access from the sides and the rear instead of only over the top. Crucially, you stay on the ground the entire time you open and close it — which removes both the climbing minutes and the fall risk in one stroke. 

How much time? Great Western’s own operators have seen a rolling system save up to an hour per load versus wrestling with straps, bungees, and multiple tarps. Even at the conservative end — say you recover just the 20 to 30 minutes of a straightforward manual tarping, twice per covered load — that’s real capacity. 

The Math That Actually Matters: Turns Per Day 

Minutes saved is the wrong way to think about it. Turns gained is the right way. 

The clearest example is short-haul, high-frequency work, where tarping can account for a significant share of each cycle. In this type of operation, a driver completing five to eight loads per day with manual tarping may be able to increase daily turns with a rolling tarp system because the time saved covering and uncovering the load compounds at every stop. 

Put rough numbers to it. If manually tarping and untarping a load takes a combined 45 minutes, and a rolling system reduces that process to just a few minutes, you could recover close to 40 minutes per load. Across five loads, that’s more than three hours of potential operating time. 

On short runs, those recovered hours may create room for additional loads. On longer routes, they could mean completing the same workday sooner. And on a dedicated lane repeated day after day, that recovered time can have a meaningful impact on productivity and the economics of the route. 

The potential savings don’t stop with labor. A properly designed rolling tarp system may also improve aerodynamics compared with an exposed load, while reducing the repeated dragging, climbing, folding, and handling associated with manual tarps. Less handling can also mean less wear on the tarp itself. 

The real ROI isn’t simply how many minutes a rolling tarp saves. It’s what your fleet can do with those minutes once you get them back. 

Where a Rolling System Doesn’t Automatically Win 

A rolling tarp system can deliver meaningful time and labor savings, but it isn’t automatically the right solution for every operation. 

The first consideration is weight. A rolling tarp system adds weight compared with a bare flatbed and conventional tarps, and that additional weight reduces available payload. For operators regularly hauling dense freight at or near maximum legal weight, that trade-off needs to be part of the calculation. 

Maintenance matters, too. The system only delivers its intended efficiency when the rollers, tracks, and moving components are kept in good condition. Dirt, damage, inadequate lubrication, ice, and snow can increase resistance and make the system more difficult to operate. A neglected system can quickly give back some of the time it was purchased to save. Routine cleaning, lubrication, and inspection help keep it moving as designed. 

There are also loads where traditional open-deck equipment simply makes more sense. Oversized or irregularly shaped freight, loads requiring unrestricted overhead crane access, or freight that doesn’t require weather protection may be better suited to a conventional flatbed or drop deck. 

Rolling tarp systems tend to provide their greatest advantage with repeatable, palletized, bundled, or relatively uniform freight that requires weather protection and frequent loading and unloading. That’s where faster access and reduced tarp handling can have the greatest effect on turn times. 

Run the Numbers for Your Operation 

Manual tarping can consume significant time every time a covered load is opened and closed—and it requires drivers to repeatedly handle heavy tarps and work around the trailer and load. A rolling tarp system replaces much of that process with a system designed to be operated from ground level. 

Across multiple loads per day, those minutes can add up to hours of recovered operating time. But the calculation should include more than speed. Payload requirements, freight type, route frequency, driver handling, maintenance needs, and equipment cost all matter.
